Oliver ran away from home at the tender age of 16 to follow his dream of becoming a shoemaker. Working beside some of London’s finest craftsmen, he soon showed an aptitude way beyond his years and in no time was dreaming again - this time of launching his own brand.

After working with some of the top shoe brands of the 70s and 80s, Oliver launched his eponymous label in 1989 to rave reviews.

Writing in GQ, Dylan Jones said: “What Manolo Blahnik is to women, so Sweeney is to men: the creator of some of the chicest shoes in the country". International menswear magazine Maxim called him “the undisputed king of men’s footwear”.

After meeting Tim Cooper on a trip to Florence in 1993 Oliver switched his production to Italy – home to the world’s finest shoemakers.

As the brand continued to grow so did the friendship between the two shoemakers, but in 2005 Oliver experienced a severe stroke and it became harder for him to run the business in the way he wanted.

In 2009 Tim Cooper and Amery Capital took over the company. Their friendship is as strong as ever and Oliver remains at the heart of the brand.
