You may have noticed there is a trend in the world of sneakers for chunkier soles, the so called ‘ugly dad trainer’, but at Oliver Sweeney we don’t do ugly, so we set ourselves the task of building a ‘not ugly dad trainer’.
With this product it was key to get the sole right, we wanted to produce a shoe without the problems inherited in chunky soles of weight and flexibility. Who wants shoes that are uncomfortable and make you walk like a zombie? Working with one of our favourite Italian sole makers we came up with a method and material that whilst it achieves the look required was both lightweight and flexible. Next we moved on to the upper, so many of the ‘dad trainers’ have gaudy uppers that give a look but with no craft.
We decided after a number off prototypes that our favourite material for this project was the beautiful buffalo leather, called Todde from the Incas tannery in Tuscany. This leather combined with the best quality suede and hiker inspired D-rings is then coloured waxed and burnished on the last.
The upper and sole are then combined to create our SNEAKER 33 ‘the not ugly dad trainer’
