How to Wash & Care for Linen Clothing

Care Guides

The beautiful character of linen comes from the natural fibres of the flax plant. The yarn often has a distinctive slub, instantly synonymous with premium quality. Fabrics can vary from superfine to heavier weight textured weaves.

Strong, breathable and with moisture wicking properties the fabric dries more quickly than cotton, is gentle on the skin, and is prized for its thermoregulating and cool characteristics, especially in the high heat of the summer.

Not only is a natural fabric an obvious option from a sustainability perspective, but another benefit is that the flax plant is relatively quick to grow in cool climates such as Northern and Western Europe, requiring few or no chemicals and little water, making it an environmentally friendly choice all round. From a practical point of view, linen is remarkably easy to maintain - machine washable and quick to dry.

Linen Care

Of course, some items do need frequent regular washing, but much of our wardrobe can be aired after wear and happily avoid water for a good while. A good clothing deodoriser spray can also help to freshen items up between wears.

This is a sustainable approach, saves time and money, and will also prolong the life of our favourite garments.

Before Washing
  • Please check the care instruction label. The garment may be a combination of fabrics or the fabric may be a blend of fibres with specific washing instructions.
  • Turn garments inside out to wash. This will protect the outer fibres.
  • Wash with like colours.
Washing
  • Machine wash at 30°C using a mild detergent to preserve the fibres and colour.
  • Choose a medium spin speed to avoid excessive creasing.
Drying
  • Avoid tumble drying as there is a possibility of shrinkage.
  • Shake, reshape and hang the garment on a non-marking hanger to dry, or lay flat on a rack.
  • Steam or iron on the reverse while still slightly damp.
