How to Wash & Care for Merino Wool
Merino wool is an incredibly fine and soft material sourced from Merino sheep - a breed which has been selectively bred over time to produce this prized yarn.
The fibres are hypoallergenic and gentle on the skin so will not scratch, itch, or irritate. This superfine and temperature regulating nature extends the season of the woollen knit to a versatile, all year-round garment rather than the preserve of winter.
Wash Infrequently
Wool is a natural, sustainable, renewable and biodegradable material which, of course, makes it an excellent choice for the environment. Even better for the planet and your wallet, it wicks away moisture, is naturally odour resistant with antibacterial properties, repels dirt and stains and thus requires infrequent washing.
Hang your woollens up to air after wear rather than condemning them to the washing basket - this will save time and money and preserve the life of your knit. Spot clean minor marks and freshen with a clothing deodoriser spray from time to time if you like a fresh fragrance.

Before Washing
- Always check the care instruction label. The garment may be a combination of fabrics, or the material may be a blend of fibres with specific washing instructions.
- Turn garments inside out to wash. This will protect the outer fibres.
- Wash with like colours.
Hand Washing
- Hand wash cool at no more than 30°C - this is lower than body temperature so the water should feel cool or lukewarm to the touch and not warm.
- Use a mild or wool specific detergent.
- Rinse in lukewarm water, then finish with a cold water rinse.
- Avoid wringing but squeeze out excess water or lay on a flat towel, fold and press the excess water into the towel. This will maintain the shape.
Machine Washing
- Machine wash cool or cold at no more than 30°C on a gentle woollens cycle or handwash cycle, with a low spin speed - max 400 RPM. A high spin speed can felt and shrink wool regardless of the washing temperature.
- Use a mild or wool specific detergent.
Drying
- Avoid tumble drying as there is a strong possibility of shrinkage with any woollen knit.
- Air dry flat on a rack away from direct heat.
- Cool iron if required on the reverse with light pressure.
Dry Cleaning
If you prefer the professionals to take over, choose a reputable dry cleaner, but always check the label for suitability beforehand.
